I Didn’t Expect This: How AI is Changing My Creative Process

I’ve been evaluating intelligence (AI) services and looking at how they can help my creative process. The chain of events went like this (maybe you too?):

  • Amazed
  • Scared
  • Curious
  • Optimistic

But, above all, AI has changed my creative process in a way I hadn’t expected. After over 20 years as a digital content creator, I understand the struggle of perfecting every piece of content I produce. News release, video, artwork – whatever – the creative process can be daunting, from obsessing over word choice to worrying about how others will receive the final product.

Enter AI.

While some may view AI as a threat to the creative industry, many more are excited about the potential to revolutionise how we approach content creation.

Here are the three surprises:

Eliminating Perfectionism

Perfectionism can be a significant roadblock for content creators. It causes this weird paralysis that sees countless hours ebb away while we obsess over every detail. AI can help to eliminate this tendency by automating specific tasks, such as proofreading and formatting. This frees up more time for us to focus on the creative aspects of our work rather than getting bogged down in minor details. Before AI, content creators would write every word and construct every sentence. With AI, we spend a more significant proportion of time curating and editing. It’s a uniquely liberating collaboration between man and machine. And it feels like freedom.

Removing Fear Of Criticism

As content creators, we put a lot of ourselves into our work. This can make us feel vulnerable to criticism and hesitant to put our work into the world. It feels like weird self-sabotage where you judge your work more harshly than others will ever care.

However, with AI, the process feels more like a collaboration than a judgement on personal skills and abilities. As a team, it’s easier to compromise on individual differences that may or may not add to the value of the content you create. And this changes everything.

Reducing Overthinking

With AI, we can access data-driven insights to guide our creative process. We can use tools like Google Trends to see popular topics and tailor our content accordingly. This makes it easier to create our own uniquely human slant and opinions.

For balance, there are risks, of course.

There’s a risk of losing the human touch and creating content that feels robotic or impersonal. Additionally, some may argue that AI tools can never fully replace the creativity and intuition of a human creator.

However, if we approach AI as a tool to assist and enhance our creative process rather than replace it, we can reap the benefits of both human and machine intelligence. By combining the strengths of AI with our creativity and intuition, we can create impactful and authentic content. It feels like this is where the future may lie.

Whatever you think of AI, the change is coming. Let’s face it; it’s here. With smart new work processes, we may unlock a new level of productivity and success in our content creation and unleash a new era of human creativity.
